Shane Phillips — Rooted in Tradition. Alive in Practice.
His approach is distinctive: a keen, observant eye and clear guidance that leave students feeling genuinely seen and invited into deeper practice. He helps practitioners build physical strength, stability, and freedom of movement while cultivating mental calm and grounded resilience.
Shane's journey reflects nearly two decades of immersive practice and close mentorship with senior Iyengar teachers—a rare lineage he honored while choosing not to confine himself to any single institution. In Los Angeles, he trained daily at YogaWorks Montana Avenue—a vibrant gathering place where leading teachers shaped a generation of practitioners. Welcomed as family, he learned through direct, hands-on transmission and built relationships with senior teachers that continue as a living dialogue. As an artist of form and communication, he continually refines how to share this work.
With this foundation and his mentors' encouragement, Shane moved to Paris in 2022 to carry the work forward. His wife, who studies with him, was instrumental in the move. His teaching now reaches a growing local and international community, bringing together the rigor of classical Hatha alignment training with the openness of his California roots. He continues advanced study with senior Iyengar leaders in India, Italy, and the United States.
Yogaś citta‑vṛtti‑nirodhaḥ.
— Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind.
— Yoga Sūtra I.2 · Patañjali · translation: Edwin F. Bryant

Often called Embodied Alignment, Shane's teaching pairs precise, progressive form with attentive direction to cultivate physical intelligence and steady the mind. He teaches with compassionate authority, aiming to free students from limiting patterns. He creates a supportive, non-performative space where all levels work honestly; direct and often wry, he offers clear, practical instruction with warmth and exacting care—always with respectful consent.
His precise attention to how each person receives the work brings clarity and restores energy. Through hands-on refinement and progressive sequencing, he prioritizes breath, foundations, and core—cultivating listening and stillness—while addressing root causes of posture and tension. Experienced students find the depth they seek; newcomers find a clear path to steady progress.
Rooted in nearly two decades of mentorship and classical training, Shane has carved out a rare lineage-informed path, integrating wider influences without sacrificing technical rigor. He approaches yoga as a living craft—disciplined, technically rigorous, and shaped with an artist's attention to form and communication.
